Artist's Statement
First, a photographer’s confession: I admit that in museums I spend more time viewing individual paintings than I do individual photographs! My sense is that most people do the same. So what makes the casual viewer admire a painting more than a photograph? The answer, I suspect, lies with techniques painters have learned over the centuries to attract the eye with visual cues and illusions that are enjoyable to see and experience. In the images I prepare, I attempt to apply these visual tricks to photography. I have taken this tack because most photographs are mundane—thanks especially to the recent influence of smart phones—so I don’t wish to just produce photographs. Instead, my intention is to create digital images that are enjoyable enough to return to and look at again.
